The history of Nafplio is a living testament to the layers of history that have shaped this captivating town. Its origins trace back to ancient times, playing a role in both Mycenaean and Classical Greek civilizations. However, it was during the Byzantine era that Nafplio began to take on prominence. In the early 13th century, the Franks established the city as a key stronghold, but it was the Venetians who left a lasting mark, fortifying the town with structures like the Palamidi Fortress and Bourtzi Castle.
